COUNTDOWN TO THE CHRIST

70 Weeks Countdown

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’  he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple  he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.

DANIEL 9:25

Here, we will decipher the 70 weeks of prophecy in the Book of Daniel Chapter 9 using the ancient Babylonian system discussed earlier. This is not a new system but a way that has been used in Christian churches for a long time to decipher this prophecy. The calendar consists of 360 days to make a complete year. These are also called prophetic years. To understand what the Angel Gabriel was talking about, we must translate those years to our modern Gregorian Calendar of 365.25 days a year. How can we achieve this? We do that by the use of this simple formula:

We take 360 and multiply it by the time we wish to translate. I will use three years for this example. The answer should give us the total number of days in those three years, which is 1080. Please remember that the total days never change, but how we divide them into years changes. So, 365.25 will have a more significant share of days per year.

360 days a year x 3 years based on a 360-day year = 1080 total days. Now, let us translate this into our modern years by dividing the total days by 365.25, and we will get 2.9 years in modern times. You see, the modern years appear smaller because they have more days allocated to a year.

Remember, the days are the same, so the length is the same. It is just how we categorise or file them as years that changes. With different empires came different calendars and ways in which we file those days, and depending on what culture and period you are from, you will need to get to the original number of days spent and divide it into your calendar.

25 And thou shalt know and understand, that from the going forth of the command for the answer and for the building of Jerusalem until Christ the prince there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks; and then the time shall return, and the street shall be built, and the wall, and the times shall be exhausted. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, the anointed one shall be destroyed, and there is no judgment in him: and he shall destroy the city and the sanctuary with the prince that is coming: they shall be cut off with a flood, and to the end of the war which is rapidly completed he shall appoint the city to desolations.

SEPTUAGINT LXX

So, the Angel Gabriel tells Daniel that 70 weeks have been declared and describes what will happen and when. He says that the Messiah will be cut off and put to death. The sevens are weeks of years or years in groups of seven. So, let us work this out together.

The angel gave 49 ancient years for the restoration of Jerusalem after the walls were built for repopulation and rededication of the people. If we take 49 and add it to 434, we will get 483 Babylonian years based on 360 days a year. Now, let’s use the formula to translate the number 483 to modern years to decipher what the angel was talking about.

70 weeks of Daniel

It is important to remember that we must add one year to the crossing over from BC (before Christ) to AD ( the year of our Lord). Why? The Gregorian calendar, which is the most commonly used calendar today, does not have a year zero. The year 1 BC is immediately followed by the year AD 1.

We can work backwards from what we know to investigate what the Angel Gabriel was talking about. We know that Jesus was crucified in 33 AD. If we take 33 and subtract 476, we will get negative 443. If we add one more year, it will be 444 BC.

This was the year Nehemiah was allowed to return back to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls and repopulate the city.

We see that there are another 7 years left over, as the scripture says,

27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple, he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

DANIEL 9:27 NIV

The majority of today’s Christians believe that this has yet to happen. However, this is something we will explore in line with the words of Jesus. The angel Gabriel is saying that the Abomination that causes Desolation will be set up in the middle of 7 specific years after the temple’s destruction in 70 AD. It talks about someone confirming a covenant with many for one seven other renderings of this scripture like the Septuagint says

27 And one week shall establish the covenant with many: and in the midst of the week my sacrifice and drink-offering shall be taken away: and on the temple shall be the abomination of desolations; and at the end of time an end shall be put to the desolation.

SEPTUAGINT LXX

Daniel 9:24 of the scripture explains the reason for the 70 weeks

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

So, to break this down, we can see that the angel Gabriel said that Israel (Judea) had to complete their transgression before the Lord. An end to sin will come through the death and resurrection of Christ, and the atonement for wickedness will be made with the destruction of the temple and the city, which was followed by the great distress that Jesus spoke about in the gospels. After that, the return of the Lord brings Everlasting righteousness in the 1000-year reign of Christ and when those years are exhausted.

The next part we will examine is the Angel Gabriel’s words in verse 26. Many Christians are unaware of its actual meaning.

26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

This passage explains that after Jesus is crucified, the Romans will come and destroy Jerusalem and the temple, an event that occurred in 70 AD. The Bible mentions that many atrocities will befall the Israelites until the verse that speaks of the Abomination of Desolation is established. It’s important to understand the confusion that arises when people claim this event has not yet occurred, as it disrupts the prophetic flow and context of many scriptures.

Nehemiah returned, and Jerusalem was given 49 years to rebuild itself. Following that, it was granted another 427 years until the crucifixion of Christ. Thirty-seven years later, Jerusalem was destroyed, and both Christians and Israelites faced a time of persecution by the Romans that lasted roughly 300 years. The Western Roman Empire came to an end in 476 AD.

Some people jump 1,548 years ahead to assert that the Abomination of Desolation has not appeared yet, disregarding the brutal impact of the rise of Islam on the people in that region who did not accept Muhammad’s teachings. The emergence of Islam led to institutionalized slavery, with hundreds of thousands of women taken from their homes and sexually exploited. This aspect of history regarding the rise of Islam is well-documented, yet many Christians remain unaware of it.

Do you think the Angel Gabriel considered these events too insignificant to mention, especially considering that Islam ruled the area where Jesus and his people lived for over 14 centuries until the present? We cannot take prophecy seriously if we overlook these significant developments. What you will discover in my blogs is that, ironically, the same Angel Gabriel who speaks about the rise of Islam and states that it will exceed the wickedness of Rome, as mentioned in Daniel 7:25 of the Septuagint, is also claimed to be the one who delivered the Quran. This presents a significant problem.

  1. It will be spoken of and confirmed in the book of the prophet Daniel (Matt 24:15, Mark 14:15)
  2. It will be a challenging time for pregnant women & nursing mothers  (Matt 24:19, Mark 14:17)
  3. Something will happen when this thing is standing in the place it should not be (Matt 24:15, Mark 14:15)
  4. Jesus says that this will be in fulfilment of what has been written and declared so that we can find evidence in the prophets (Luke 21:22)
  5. Jesus tells his people to leave and never return. The true Israelites had to leave that region.  (Matt 24:16-18, Mark 14:14-17)
  6. The days will be shortened because of his people, the elect they will not return until the angels gather them from the 4 winds of heaven (Matt 24:31, Mark 14:27)
  7. A time of distress will appear in mankind that will never be equalled again. (Matt 24:21, Mark:14:19, Luke 21:24, )
  8. to complete their transgression and atone for wickedness (Daniel 9:24)
  9. The Abomination that causes desolation will be built within a specific 7 years (Daniel 9:27)
  10. The man that builds it will unify a people under one covenant during the 7 years (Daniel 9:27)
  11. It will be destroyed at the end of time so that it will last a very long time. (Daniel 9:27)

Now, please remember that the scriptures mention two Abominations of Desolation. The first one happened with Antiochus IV Epiphanes over a century and a half before Jesus was born. It must not be confused with the one Jesus had spoken of.
